Miscellaneous Update
August 12th, 2022
I will always remember the philosophical conversations we had since our time at Suffolk College... and the horror film debates too. I'll always remember that time at Thunders while all the other guys were dancing and making out with each other, we were sitting at the table talking philosophy at 2am and also debating who was better, Freddy or Jason. You were one of the best friends I had... open and honest about everything without judgment. I could always come to you for honest creative feedback on my story and film ideas. You composed the music for my first short film.... and then helped out on set for the very first shoot of Trip to the Moon. I just wish you could have been on more film shoots with us and composed more music. When you were diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, you chose laughter over depression to help you get through it. I'm glad I was able to help make you laugh even if I didn't get to see you one last time.

Miscellaneous Update
December 12th, 2021
Today I found out that I lost one of my closest friends. At the same time that I was filming Trip to the Moon at JHD Productions, Hugh Daly had passed away at the hospital at around 2pm on December 11th. When I got the call today, I was painting signs for the rooftop scene in preparation for the day's shoot. We knew everything about each other and could talk about anything at any time. He even installed a phone in his bedroom just in case I ever needed to call and talk to someone at 2am..... which I have. He was well aware of the crazy and stupid people I had to deal with in my personal life and was always there to let me vent and calm me down. He restored my self confidence when I needed it the most and was always there to say, "Fuck those people. They don't know you. You're better than them."
Even when we had our arguments, we were always able to talk it out. Despite getting on each others nerves at times, our friendship endured through it all because we always held onto a basic understanding of each other. It's hard to find friends like that and he will always be someone that I consider special in my life.
RIP

Miscellaneous Update
January 30th, 2021
JHD Productions has moved around the corner to a new studio space. I am hoping
to shoot the postponed scenes there by the Fall or whenever the corona madness
has ended. While the film has been edited and backgrounds have been worked on
throughout the entire process, Trip to the Moon has entered into full post production,
which means that I will start focusing more on effects rather than shooting, since
writing and filming has taken up most of my focus since 2014.

As for the old studio, it has been completely gutted, even more so than the photo
I have provided. I have been told that all of the inner walls have been taken out to
make room for new office space. The new studio is smaller, but sufficient for the
scenes I need to shoot next... after which, the remainder of shooting will be put on
hold until the very end of post production. At that point, I will determine what inserts
or scenes I will need to round out the pacing or fill in any plot holes.

All remaining props and costumes have been moved into my storage unit, including
any set pieces that I felt should be kept. Unfortunately, some set pieces had to be
thrown away due to lack of space. It's weird for me to see 7 years of my life in one
room and how much I've accumulated over that length of time. When the weather
gets warmer, my plan is to organize everything better so I can at least have some
walking space.

During these last two shoots in October and December, we lost someone who had
volunteered to help out on set. He was in on the running jokes we told throughout the day and a real pleasure to have around. Unfortunately, on December 17th, the day before we were to resume shooting after a 4 day break, Jay lost his life shortly after a winter storm. He will always be remembered and I will always appreciate the laughter shared between us during what sometimes felt like a stressful shoot. Thank you for your help on set and you will always be in our thoughts.

Trip to the Moon Update
November 14th, 2020
October was a successful shoot, despite COVID. However, due to certain circumstances,
some scenes had to be delayed to December. Sometimes it seems like a never ending
task shooting this film, but that's mostly due to budget and my own standards. I've had
amazing support from my cast and crew and I appreciate them for sticking with it.
I added some last minute changes to some of the scenes, including a completely different
ending to the press conference scene, which will include an attack by Ruler Zahn from his
saucer... but no spoilers ;)

Miscellaneous Update
April 5th, 2020
Due to the coronavirus madness, our scheduled shoot for Trip to the Moon in May
has been pushed back to October. Many retailers whom I get my good costumes
and vintage furniture rentals from are all temporarily closed. I was looking forward
to finishing up the main scenes in May, but there's nothing I can do. So, after
October, the focus will shift to all post production where I will continue working
on the effects without the constant interruptions and expenses of shooting.

In other news, I am now currently working from home, remotely accessing NBC
computers, which is an interesting change and saving a lot of money by not having
to commute on the Long Island Railroad... which will no doubt raise its fares after
this, so I'm hoping the work at home arrangement becomes permanent. All of this
time at home hasn't really affected me since I am naturally an introvert (for the
most part), but it also gave me the courage to give myself a really short buzz cut
last night... like really short... so, I figured I might as well save more money
and since the salon is closed, it was really the best option (no, you will never
see it -- that's what hats are for) lol

Trip to the Moon Update
November 10th, 2019
I can't believe it's been a whole year since my last post.
We just completed an intense 2 week shoot in October
featuring new scenes with some new characters, because I
just can't stop myself, apparently. The script is now
reaching 180 pages, which means that it looks to be a 3
hour film. I've considered breaking it into 2 films, but I just
feel that it's not meant to be viewed that way, so I will
cut it down as much as I can.
The next shoot is planned for January and then the last
shoot for main characters will be in May. Then (finally) all
post production after that, with some additional scenes
with new actors to be shot near the end of that process.
This is the biggest project I have ever taken on, so it will
be the best that I can make it, even if it's an epic 3 hour
opus.

It Gets Better? Update
November 1st, 2018
Just got my copy of Testosterone: Volume 1, which includes the short film, It Gets Better?
...written and directed by Stephen Riscica. I served as Assistant Director and editor on this
film back in 2016.

This DVD is a collection of 4 short films regarding LGBTQ issues released by the iconic
distribution company, TLA Releasing, in conjunction with Dekkoo, the online streaming
service for LGBTQ media. I have over 20 titles in my DVD collection that tackle issues in the
gay community and I'm happy to now include one that I had a hand in.

Trip to the Moon Update
September 19th, 2018
Robert Broski (Abraham Lincoln) asked me to create an 8x10 for him to
take to conventions for people to sign and to promote the film. So, I
created this today using one of the 3D sets from the film and a promotional
image shot on green screen. I also discovered a neat font in my collection,
which I think I will use from now on.

In prop news, I got a new illuminating globe from Italy that will sit on a
desk in a scene we will be shooting next year. It will also serve as a
functional secret door switch. I was reminded of the fish tank switch that
opened the door to the Bat Cave in Tim Burton's 1992 film, Batman Returns,
so I wanted to do something like that. Unfortunately, the bulb inside broke
during shipment, so that's on order as well as a plus adapter for US power.

Trip to the Moon Update
August 28th, 2018
On what turned out to be one of the hottest days in August, I spent today
moving out all of the props and costumes for Trip to the Moon
that I had stored in the studio at JHD Productions with a rented U-Haul
truck. Yesterday, I bought a storage unit to put everything in, but I may
have underestimated how much stuff I have. While I am sure I could
stuff everything into the storage unit if I tried, I may actually be better off
leaving the props and costumes that I have at home where they are. This
would make it easier for me to sort through them when needed for the
final major shoot next year. My apartment has become its own storage
unit, but this is the sacrifice I am making (among others) to get this film
done. A sacrifice that I have found, not many other indie filmmakers are
willing to make.

Trip to the Moon Update
July 1st, 2018
So much has happened since my last entry here. The film is now roughly 95%
shot with scenes completed in April, May and June. The final shoot has been
pushed back to April 2019 due to lack of funding, but I plan to launch a new
online fundraiser this summer once the trailer is re-cut and effects are updated.
In April, we shot a slow motion sequence with 11 soldiers, but unfortunately,
the camera malfunctioned and half the footage is now unusable. It sucks, but
these kinds of things happen when making a film. This scene will be re-shot
as part of our final shoot next April using a different camera and I am hoping
that all of the same actors can return.

Last month, we rebuilt the original set from 2014. This time, only half of the set
was actually needed, but it had to be an exact replica of what we had back in
2014. Luckily, the original scene had Booth and his co-conspirators' action
taking place on one side of the set, which made it easier to re-shoot.
I will take the shots of our new actor playing Booth (Stephen J. Thompson)
and insert him into the old footage, replacing the old actor. This time around,
I was able to get some additional creative shots that I missed in 2014.

With 99% of our scenes being shot on green screen, it was nice to actually shoot
in the real world for a change. I wrote a scene that was separate from the script
and will incorporate it into the news segments when I do another re-write this
summer. It's a scene that we were able to shoot right outside the studio in
the parking lot. I bought a "stage door" sign from Etsy and placed it in the
window by the studio door and all action took place in that area. It was also
a rare moment for me to go handheld with the camera, breaking away from
the typical setups I would do for green screen on this film.

The script has undergone more than 20 re-writes in the last 4 years. This
summer, I will be writing the completed story with revised news segments and
new scenes. I've decided to add a few more characters as well in order to deepen
the plot. As it stands right now, the film looks to be roughly 90 minutes long. With
the new scenes, it could possibly be closer to 2 hours.

Trip to the Moon Update
May 3rd, 2018
I was looking through my props today when I came across this. It's a contact
lens we used for the Lincoln dream sequence back in November 2017. I didn't
realize how cheaply made these lenses were when I bought them. One of them
ripped while in the makeup chair trying to fit it into Robert's eye. We had to
shoot the scene with only one contact lens in. It's the little things you don't
expect to happen on a film set that will cost you time in the edit later. We took
photos of the lens and I will have to digitally place a second lens into his other
eye for the effect. Luckily, he's more like a still zombie in the scene, so it should
be easy to composite. While I'm at it, I might even add some light effects.

Trip to the Moon Update
April 24th, 2018
I acquired this item from an online artist and I loved it so much that I wanted to
work it into the film. I am writing a short scene that is basically just for the guitar,
but still makes sense within the story. It also allows me to expand upon the
steampunk universe within the film and show more of what goes on beyond the
main action. Without revealing too much, my concept for the scene involves a
musician onstage at a dive bar when Zahn's ship arrives on Earth and the patrons
who are not giving him the attention he feels he deserves at the moment... but as
usual, I'm sure the scene will evolve by the time I actually commit it to the script.

Trip to the Moon Update
March 26th, 2018
Gearing up to start shooting again in April. The final shoot is projected to be in October. After almost 5 years, principal photography
will finally be finished. When we last shot in November, we didn't have time to shoot the Lincoln bedroom scene which is the opening
of the film. This turned out to be for the best since I've decided to rework the intro. The bedroom scene has been rewritten and now
transitions perfectly from the opening title sequence of the film.

Another successful shoot wrapped on the 15th... then began
the clean up and storage of all the costumes and props used.
Some have a permanent home in my apartment, but the rest
is stored at the studio. I pulled a muscle in my back trying to
lift them into areas where they can sleep until next time. I just
hope my back is better by next week when we attempt to return
the "White House doors" I bought at Home Depot.

Aiming to shoot again in April or May... at which time, we will be
reshooting parts of the original Launch Room set in order to
replace the original actor portraying John Wilkes Booth with the
new actor, Stephen Joshua Thompson. Those new shots
will be inserted into the first movie trailer along with updated
effects and will replace the current trailer listed on this website.

Trip to the Moon Update
November 6th, 2017
A busy final week before shooting resumes on Wednesday. I finished the steampunk
add-ons to the minigun, but might add another gauge to the top before shoot day. I have a
few lying around, but I am hoping that the new ones I ordered from Russia get here on time.
A few hours spray painting pieces I bought from Home Depot with 3 different metallic colors
really came out well... plus a few random pieces that my set designer gave me. I had to buy a
hot glue gun to stick them all on and I have to say, I really love that thing.

I spent the day at the studio making sure I have every prop and costume ready to go. However,
three days ago, I couldn't find the EMP prop that I will continue to need for future scenes. I
thought it was lost forever and I tore my apartment and the studio apart looking for it. When
I got home today, I found it in a box I had already looked in, buried under packing peanuts and
other props from the last shoot.......... omg... heart attack avoided.

Trip to the Moon Update
September 14th, 2017
Gathering what I need for the November
shoot and remembered that it's time to
paint one of my prop guns that I bought
more than a year ago. It's been in my
closet ever since then, just waiting to be
used. Well, just today, I took it out to
make sure it worked... located the battery
compartment and found that the one
screw holding the lid on was stripped
within a deep hole... sooo after exhausting
all other options, I did what any good
ghetto props department would do...
I burned the bitch :D

Like a crazy pyromaniac, I melted all the
plastic around the screw and simply lifted.
The plastic stretched like taffy as I burned
it again until victory had been achieved.
Now I just need to glue something
decorative on there to cover the damage.

Since the auditions on Sept. 5th at Shetler Studios in NYC, we've found our new additions to the cast. Tad and Mary Todd Lincoln will be featured in
the scenes being filmed in November. Originally, the scenes were shorter, but I have since expanded them to show more emotion and to give the audience a better understanding of Abraham Lincoln's family life that we hear about later in the film... not just from the news media, but also
during the confrontation between Lincoln and Booth. This will help to tie in various story elements for a better rounded plot.

BMF Studios Update
August 3rd, 2017
BMF Studios, Inc. is officially born today.
Even though I have been working as a freelancer since 1998 on various projects as well as using the BMF Studios name in my work, it has become necessary that I officially form BMF Studios as a corporate entity due to the plans I have upcoming. Tackling the complexities of producing my first feature length film, Trip to the Moon, has shown me that I am ready to take my work to the next level. As always, I will continue to work in association with JHD Productions Ltd. as I have since 2001, who has just today, given me my first paycheck under my new corporate name. We will be working together to complete product videos for a local manufacturing company.

On my drive over to JHD to pick up the raw footage for the new videos, I began thinking about the evolution of the BMF Studios logo. The image was originally conceived back in 1995 when I was 15 in 10th grade. I was bored and doodling in my notebook in class and imagining my initials as a single image. The result was a backwards "B" and then a partial "M" extending outward to create the "F" over a single floating line... all using invisible connecting lines to each letter.

Trip to the Moon Update
September 12th, 2016

Another successful audition at Shetler Studios last Tuesday in NYC... although, half of the women auditioning for the role of Oda Maye mysteriously
decided not to show up, a talented actress and one of my first choices has been cast. I suspect a lot of the no-shows were due to the nature of the role, being that of a slave. Some African American actors have a hard time portraying such a role even though it helps bring attention to a troubled past which young people today could learn from.

In addition to casting the role of Oda Maye, 4 Security Guard roles were also cast, all of whom will meet their ultimate demise in their respective scenes. I have found over the years that I am learning to respect gore films. Not so much for their violent nature, but their excessive and sometimes over the top imagery. Since working on Nikos the Impaler back in 2002, I have learned to appreciate what gory deaths could bring to a film. Part of what attracted me towards doing Trip to the Moon, as opposed to the other film ideas I have, was the opportunity to explore over the top concepts and effects. As the script evolved over the past 2 years, I felt a need to explore gory deaths in the film as a sort of fun experiment after working on so many serious minded projects. Though not as intense as Nikos the Impaler, I believe these deaths will further capture the overall look of the film that I am going for. By giving the audience something new to witness every few scenes, it should keep them engaged and interested in what might happen next.... which I can say, is now one of my recently adopted filmmaking rules. It is for this reason that I've decided to cast the 4 Security Guard roles who will all die by the hand of John Wilkes Booth, adding to the suspense as he hunts for Lincoln. and adds to the suspense

A successful shoot this past weekend for It Gets Better?, a film about an older man looking back on his youth and contemplating the concept of the "It Gets Better" internet campaign. We used the Arri Alexa camera rig under the direction of Stephen Riscica at his apartment on Saturday and in the studio on Sunday. My role as Assistant Director has now transformed into editor as we move into the post production phase. Originally, Michael Alig, whose life was portrayed by McCauley Culkin in the 2003 film, Party Monster, was cast to play the main role, but had to drop out. Coincidentally,
Gys de Villiers of my film, Trip to the Moon, auditioned as a replacement for Michael Alig and won the role.

Next up on the shooting schedule will be all of Ruler Zahn's scenes as the costume is currently being made.

Trip to the Moon Update
February 3rd, 2016
The January shoot went very well with minimal speed bumps. All of General Melies' scenes are now completed. Additional pickup shots may be needed in the future, but I'll worry about that in the edit. A huge thank you to the cast and crew who made it through the 9 consecutive 10-hour days it took to get done... and the 9 days of discounted Domino's Pizza :D

Trip to the Moon Update

Auditions are being held tomorrow in NYC for the roles of Edwin Stanton and Lawson
Gardner. Additional soldier roles are also being cast as we make our way to the January
shoot. The last 2 weeks were a hectic time for gathering the needed costume pieces and props. Doesn't help the wallet when the items you see online give you ideas for adding
to "the look" .......put it on the card :)
More mail continues to pile in as it arrives

Shooting will resume this summer... all of Ruler Zahn's scenes will be completed. Character concept design has been sent to the FX artist for review and finalization. Once that is set, the costume build will be underway and a shooting date will be set at JHD Productions. Also, the script is now on the shorter side of a feature length film instead of a short film and is currently undergoing some revisions. I'm looking to shoot the majority of the remainder of the film in the Fall depending on scheduling.
